The Winter landscapes of Santorini
Santorini is a dreamy place to experience out of season too. Of course, it is absolutely majestic in the Spring, Summer and Autumn, however there is an unmistakable, rugged charm that captivates you during the harsher season of the year. Santorini is an island of dramatic contrasts and there is something that inspires awe when observing its riveting landscapes, windswept or against an overcast sky. Since most of you will never get to experience it during winter, we have collated a few photographs that showcase the winter landscapes of Santorini to give you an idea of what you are missing.
A shot of the Caldera, taken from below. Reveals the complexity of the volcanic strata upon which the all of west facing Santorini settlements and Kalisti Hotel & Suites are built on.
A sombre capture of the precipice on the southernmost part of the island, in Akrotiri. The heavy winter clouds almost touch the gray sea, against the remnants of the historical settlement that was found there.
An iconic white and blue dome church, one of the many churches in Santorini, seen in the foreground to Imerovigli and Fira cliff top settlements in the distance.
And yes, it does snow in Santorini as well although not often. It is such a beautiful sight to see a pristine veil of snow cover everything, even the volcano! It almost looks like caster sugar, does it not?
A professional photograph that has captured the sheer intensity of Santorini’s winter landscape. Full of texture, contrast, depth and fascination.
And finally two photos revealing that the Santorini sunset can be as equally breathtaking during the winter.
